Once again I picked up a new teen series to take a stab at. It was another free advanced readers copy (thank you Chapters) and since its sequel, Arise, came out recently I figured I had better get a move on in reading Hereafter. A quick, enjoyable read I do believe I will take a gander at Arise (that is once it comes out in paperback, hardcovers just are not in the budget at the moment).
Although written in the typical teen fiction style of girl meets boy, girl cannot be with boy, boy's family members disapprove of girl, etc. I did find it an entertaining read. I have always been intrigued by the afterlife (not in a morbid kind of way, more in an existential "what is out there?" kind of way) and having the main character be some sort of ghostly figure was quite amusing to me. Add in an evil presence that is not precisely named, superstitious elderly members of the community and you have set up an atmosphere for a teen romance to play out without seeming overplayed.
