Recently I have delved into the realm of steampunk and when my friend Allison suggested this series for me to read I pounced. I gobbled up Leviathan and Behemoth and am eager to read the finale of the trilogy Goliath when it comes out this September. If you are like me and enjoy retellings of history then you will enjoy this interesting slant on the events of WWI.
What if the Axis and the Allies had more sophisticated weaponry than they had in WWI? Then you would get this series, Scott Westerfeld has painted a world of Clankers and Darwinists that stretch the imagination to a new level when it comes to technology. I personally am wowed by the giant flying whale, called the Leviathan, which is nothing but a living breathing ecosystem of an airship. The British navy is not comprised of any ships you would expect but living creatures like the Leviathan which essentially are self sufficient ecosystems. Whereas the Germans boast an army of machines that far more complex than any tank, walkers that can run at high speed equipped with massive gun power.
Alek, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and Deryn, a commoner girl disguised as a boy in the navy, show how amongst differences from the best of both Darwinist and Clanker society can come something extraordinary.
