If You Have To Cry, Go Outside

If You Have to Cry, Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told YouA customer recently went through my cash at Chapters and purchased this book, just then a light bulb went off in my head: Ding! I loved watching her reality TV show Kell on Earth maybe I should pick up her book? Later that day during my break I read the first chapter: Are You There, Babe? It's Me, Your Soul. and was instantly hooked. Even if you're not entering into a career in the fashion industry or PR Kelly Cutrone gives great advice on how to enter into the world as a strong woman and be successful.

Her list of favourite "power-girl" movies is amazing, anything that puts Flashdance, Cleopatra, Erin Brockovith, and Nine to Five on one list is a winner by my standards.

If ever you're in doubt of what to wear there's The Empowered Girl's Guide to Dressing For Work which I interpreted as please don't look like a hooker, just please don't it's not flattering no matter how much someone tells you it is and mentally added unless you work at Lululemon please put some real pants on! (I'm sure several of my friends can attest to that... it's ok to wear spandex to the gym or yoga just nowhere else)

Another favourite comes from Top Ten Career Don'ts - Or How Not to Get a Career in Fashion "[3] Don't roll your eyes. If you do, roll with them toward the exit sign and then head out the door." > best advice ever! I just wish people wouldn't roll their eyes in general, you can tell me what you're thinking and I would probably be less mad at you for that than rolling your eyes!

The part of her book that really spoke to me though was about making your own religion. I'm sick of trying to conform to something that is not me, some people say religion as we know it is dying and I say good riddance if that means people will become more accepting of themselves and others. I mean seriously, ancient Rome had toilets and aqueducts then modern religion rolls in and sets us back a whole bunch... maybe we should've stayed pagans?? Nah, sacrificial goats/virgins don't really float my boat but you get the point.

Another very important point made by Kelly is human contact, use it. People get so caught up in texting and emailing that all empathy and a whole lot of the meaning of what they are attempting to convey gets lost in translation. Her advice, "give good phone" especially if you're going into anything that involves communications.

I generally only read fiction (with a heavy emphasis on fantasy) in my leisure time, mainly since textbooks fill the non-fiction void in my life (yay university haha) but was pleasantly surprised by this book. I think she may even have caused a non-fiction streak in me since I've picked up a few more and I'm liking what I'm reading.

Normal Gets You Nowhere is Kelly Cutrone's next book which is due out this May.
