March 2012

March started off swell with Rob Thurman releasing another book in her Cal Leandros series, Doubletake. I always enjoy the shenanigans that Cal, Niko, and Goodfellow get up to and this was no exception. An evil automaton bent on killing you, no problem! Got all of the pucks in the world convening in NYC, no sweat! Another romping tale of urban fantasy that had me laughing all the way through.

I began reading The Luck of Ginger Coffey in February and finished off after reading Doubletake. I enjoyed Brian Moore's story of an Irishman down on his luck, newly immigrated to Montreal. I enjoyed many things about this novel. I liked the lesson of never rely on promises, you never know whether the person making them will come through. I liked how when Ginger least expects things to turn around, he's at the lowest of low, the luck of the Irish kicks in and everything turns up roses. I liked the characters he meticulously describes, the caricatures are most amusing. I savoured this great work of fiction for how well written it was. Quite the refreshment considering the previous month I spent reading teen novels.

There is one thing that I have decided not to attempt again and that is read a book in a series that is not the first. Although I enjoyed the overall plot of Waking the Witch I felt as though I was missing a lot of pieces. There were a couple of characters that kept getting referenced which I assumed were important yet I did not know much about because they were m.i.a. the entire book. Also the major villain was someone who had been in a previous book as well, so that when she was revealed I probably should have known who she was but instead was left thinking "Who dat?" All in all an enjoyable, quick read but I am unsure as to whether I will bother reading the previous ten books in the series.

For The Luck of Ginger Coffey and Waking the Witch I have to thank my pal Lauren for lending them to me, Lauren you're a doll!
