Divergent

Divergent (Divergent Trilogy)The start of a new series, gotta love it! Although I will admit I was at first skeptical of Divergent because reviewers continuously referred to it as the next Hunger Games which is a pretty high expectation to live up to. (By the way, if you haven't read the Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins then you really should!) Veronica Roth makes her debut with this novel, the first in a new series, which is exciting since I know there will be more to come. If you enjoy dystopias with a little romance thrown in then you will definitely enjoy this book.

I found that I really connected with the main character, Tris, because I find myself interested in too many different areas that choosing a career path after university is going to be a headache for me. Which is similar to how Tris is found to be divergent, instead of just herded into one of the predetermined careers. Although she does only get to choose one faction: dauntless, who value courage above all else. The other factions include candor, who value honesty; abnegation, who value selflessness; amity, who value peace; and erudite, who value intelligence. Tris was born into abnegation and was expected to just maintain that lifestyle but when she has her evaluation to determine which faction to join she comes away with abnegation/dauntless/erudite as her results.

Being divergent allows Tris to avoid becoming an automaton when there is an uprising to overthrow the present government system. Maybe being divergent is more of a blessing in disguise than the curse she original thinks?
